Note: if your browser has problems downloading WebReader, try using FTP directly

·         If you have a suitably-formatted newsrc file from some other newsreader, WebReader can use it to create a filesystem which it needs to allow you to subscribe to newsgroups and fetch articles; check out Converting an existing non-WebReader newsrc file to WebReader format for details and caveats. Follow the instructions there if you decide to convert your third-party newsrc file to WebReader. The alternative is to download the complete newsgroup list from the news server. This approach is slower, but has the advantage of providing you with the descriptions of the newsgroups.

·         Start WebReader using the java interpreter, as you would any Java application, e.g.,

·
·                        C:> java WebReader <nntp-host>

or

  sparc5% jview WebReader <nntp-host>

where <nntp-host> is the name of the news server you will be connecting to. Contact your Internet Service Provider or system administrator if you don't know the name of your news server.

·         The first time WebReader is started, it will prompt you for certain required and optional information, such as your e-mail address, news host, mail host, etc.; this step must be completed in order for WebReader to start.

·         Next, if you have not previously converted a third-party newsrc file to WebReader format, you will be prompted to download the complete newsgroup list from your news server. You must do this before you can subscribe to newsgroups.

After the WebReader main window has appeared, check out the user documentation included with the distribution in the docs subdirectory for information on operation. If you wish, you may reference the online docs at http://www.fractals.com/webreader/docs/webreader_intro.html. Corrections and additions to the user documentation will always appear there first, so it's a good idea to at least check out the online docs from time to time. Please call or write if you have problems downloading or installing WebReader.
